Doctoral Course
CHEM007Z-LZ

General Information
Step into the future of sustainable metals production through this dynamic, research-driven course designed for curious minds and forward thinkers. Instead of traditional lectures, the course is centered around a kick-off meeting, an intensive 2-day research symposium, and a final seminar—offering a unique platform to engage with cutting-edge topics in process metallurgy and the circular economy. Throughout the course, you will explore the latest technological innovations in mineral processing, primary metal production, and recycling. You’ll also reflect on how these advancements relate to your own research, learn to communicate scientific findings effectively, and identify entrepreneurial opportunities emerging from metallurgical innovations. This is more than a course—it's a space for collaboration, critical thinking, and inspiration. Whether your goal is academic, industrial, or entrepreneurial, you’ll leave equipped to contribute meaningfully to the sustainable future of metals.

Please notice that there will be a fee (250 €) for doctoral students to join the symposium. While registering to the Symposium, you will be asked whether you are attending the course. Choose option "Yes" if you willing to attend the course.

There are three steps of the course: Before Symposium, During Symposium and After Symposium. Please carefully read the instructions on what a student must do before, during and after IPMS symposium to complete the doctoral course. If you have any questions related to the course practicalities, please contact Anna Klemettinen.
Additionally, course syllabus can be seen here.

How to complete the course?
1. Take a look at IPMS Program and chose 3 presentation topics according to your own interest. Try to find out more information about these topics. Find at least 4 scientific articles related to each topic. Topics of the presentations can be found in the Symposium program available one the website.
2. Read selected journal articles carefully through BEFORE the Symposium.
3. Write down at least three questions about each of the topic you have chosen. Remember to ask questions to presenters during the symposium.
4. Participate in Kick-off meeting of our course on 20.10 at 10:00-12:00 (online in ZOOM).
During Symposium
1. Actively participating in the whole Symposium 27-28.10.2025, absence during two presentations allowed if necessary.
2. If possible within the symposium timetable, you should ask some of the preprepared questions you have listed while preparing for the Symposium (check the Before the course section). If not possible, you may try to discuss these questions with presenters during the coffee breaks or Symposium dinner. It is recommend for each doctoral student to ask at least two questions either in conference or privately during breaks.
Remember to make notes which will help you to write the course report and prepare a presentation.
After Symposium
1. Prepare a course report summarizing and reflecting the three topics you have chosen. Length of report 8-10 pages, i.e. ~2 pages / topic. There is no template for the report. Send your report to Anna Klemettinen before 02.12.2025.
2. Prepare max 15 pp-slides of those three topics you have chosen (i.e. ~5 slides / each topic) combining the knowledge that you have learned during the symposium, from scientific articles and by public or private discussions. Make a wider view, build up the framework, e.g. if presentation is about pyrite leaching in gold chloride solution, tell why is this important? What is this related to? What have others done? What are the challenges? What is the big picture?
3. Present your slides on the Research Seminar on 2nd of December. The Seminar will be organized in a hybrid mode (you can choose whether you are participating online of face-to-face in Aalto University). Your reports and presentation will be evaluated by responsible teachers in the course Anna Klemettinen, Prof. Emer. Pekka Taskinen and Prof. Emer. Olof Forsén.
